Day 0: Barcelona

Sagrada Familia.
What other world monument, incomplete and in the works for over a century, draws so many visitors? After long periods in which construction must have been as painstakingly slow as the long line for the tickets moved today, it seems that enough progress is being made (the workshop even employs a 3D printer!), so that older folks are now talking realistically whether they will see the completion in their lifetime.

Sagrada Familia: only the Nativity façade with 4 spires was finished while Gaudi was alive. When completed, there will be a total of 18 spires, not including the cranes.

A couple of references to the Camino de Santiago, a discovery we did not expect, seem to cheer me on quietly on this eve of our walk:  the shell on one of the bronze doors designed by Subirachs, and Santiago and Camino inscribed on stained glass.

Can you make out Santiago and Camino?

After a visit to Park Guell and a quick stroll through Barri Gotic, we returned to the hotel early to get ready for a morning flight to Leon tomorrow.

At Park Guell, another Gaudi site.

The sky was overcast with some sprinkles. We did not get to try our extensive raingear we brought. But the waterproof Keen sandals were excellent. And the TEP portable wifi works well (at least in the city - we will see in the rural areas). We are as ready as we will ever get.
